GPS Rescue is a safety feature in Betaflight that can attempt to guide the drone back toward the home position if signal loss occurs.
GPS Rescue is especially useful for long-range and mid-range FPV flying, but it is not a fully autonomous or guaranteed return-to-home system.
Incorrect configuration can result in unstable behavior, crashes, or flyaways. GPS Rescue must therefore be configured and tested carefully.
Important safety notice
GPS Rescue is:
- not an autonomous navigation system,
- not a guaranteed return-to-home feature,
- and not a replacement for safe flight planning.
GPS Rescue can be affected by:
- weak GPS signal,
- incorrect settings,
- magnetic interference,
- wind,
- signal problems,
- sensor errors,
- or insufficient satellite reception.
Always test GPS Rescue carefully in a safe environment before relying on it.
Requirements
Before setup, make sure:
- Betaflight 4.1 or newer is installed
- Betaflight 4.5 or newer is recommended for modern M10 GPS modules
- A compatible GPS module is installed
- GPS is correctly wired to the flight controller
- Receiver and failsafe are already configured correctly
- The drone flies normally and stably in regular flight
GPS Rescue should never be configured on a drone that already has unresolved flight issues.
Supported GPS modules
Commonly used GPS modules include:
- BN-180
- BN-220
- M8 GPS modules
- M10 GPS modules
M10 GPS modules generally provide:
- faster GPS lock,
- improved accuracy,
- and more stable satellite connections.
Step 1 — Mount the GPS correctly
The GPS module should:
- be mounted as far away from the VTX as possible,
- have a clear view of the sky,
- not be blocked by carbon fiber plates,
- and be exposed to minimal electrical interference.
Typical mounting location:
- rear section of the drone.
Step 2 — Wire the GPS correctly
GPS modules connect through a UART:
- GPS TX → FC RX
- GPS RX → FC TX
- 5V → 5V
- GND → GND
Do not reverse TX and RX.
After wiring:
- inspect solder joints,
- avoid short circuits,
- and verify all connectors.
Step 3 — Configure the UART in Betaflight
In Betaflight:
- Open the Ports tab
- Find the UART connected to the GPS
- Under “Peripherals” select GPS
- Click Save and Reboot
Do not enable Serial RX on the same UART.
Step 4 — Enable GPS in Betaflight
Then:
- Open the Configuration tab
- Enable GPS
- Select the GPS protocol
Most modern GPS modules use:
- UBLOX
Then:
- Click Save and Reboot
If available, you may optionally enable:
- Magnetometer
However, a magnetometer is not required for most FPV setups.
Step 5 — Verify GPS operation
After rebooting:
- Place the drone outside
- Ensure clear sky visibility
- Wait several minutes for GPS lock
The first GPS lock after changing location may take longer.
Check:
- satellite count,
- GPS coordinates,
- home point,
- and GPS OSD indicators.
Recommended satellite count
Minimum:
- 6 satellites
Recommended:
- 8 or more satellites
More satellites improve:
- positioning accuracy,
- stability,
- and GPS Rescue performance.
Do not take off with a weak GPS fix.
Step 6 — Configure GPS Rescue as failsafe
In Betaflight:
- Open the Failsafe tab
- Under “Stage 2 Failsafe Procedure” select GPS Rescue
- Click Save and Reboot
When signal loss occurs, the drone will attempt to:
- climb to a safe altitude,
- return toward the home point,
- and begin descending.
Important GPS Rescue settings
Minimum Satellites
Recommended:
- at least 6,
- preferably 8 or more.
GPS Rescue should never activate without a stable GPS lock.
Rescue Altitude / Initial Climb
The drone should climb high enough to safely clear:
- trees,
- buildings,
- power lines,
- and terrain obstacles.
Altitude set too low may result in collisions.
Rescue Ground Speed
Excessive speeds may cause:
- overshooting,
- instability,
- or inaccurate return behavior.
Moderate values are usually safer.
Descent Distance and Descent Speed
Very aggressive descent rates may cause hard landings.
GPS Rescue is primarily designed to:
- return the drone closer to the pilot,
- not to perform precise autonomous landings.
Step 7 — Configure a manual GPS Rescue switch
In addition to failsafe activation, GPS Rescue should also be assigned to a dedicated switch.
In Betaflight:
- Open the Modes tab
- Select GPS Rescue
- Assign an AUX switch
- Click Save
This allows GPS Rescue to be:
- tested safely,
- or activated manually if needed.
Step 8 — Test GPS Rescue safely
Never use GPS Rescue for the first time during a long-range flight.
Safe testing recommendations:
- Use a large open area
- Ensure strong GPS signal
- Fly at safe altitude
- Avoid people and obstacles nearby
Recommended test procedure:
- Fly the drone normally
- Reach a safe altitude
- Activate the manual GPS Rescue switch
- Observe whether the drone:
- climbs correctly,
- turns toward the home point,
- and returns steadily.
If the drone behaves unexpectedly:
- disable GPS Rescue immediately,
- and regain manual control.
Common problems
No GPS lock
Possible causes:
- Poor GPS placement
- Incorrect wiring
- TX/RX reversed
- Wrong UART
- Incorrect GPS protocol
- VTX or electrical interference
GPS Rescue drifts or returns inaccurately
Possible causes:
- Too few satellites
- Weak GPS signal
- Strong wind
- Incorrect GPS configuration
- Poor GPS antenna performance
- Magnetic interference
GPS Rescue does not activate
Please verify:
- Failsafe configured correctly
- Sufficient satellite count
- GPS Rescue switch assigned correctly
- Home point recorded
- GPS Rescue activation conditions met
Drone does not return correctly
Please verify:
- Correct flight controller orientation
- Proper GPS operation
- Stable GPS signal
- Sufficient Rescue Altitude
- Stable normal flight behavior
GPS Rescue may not function reliably if:
- the drone already flies poorly,
- excessive vibration exists,
- or major tuning/configuration problems are present.
Important pre-flight recommendations
Before every flight, verify:
- Sufficient satellite count
- Home point recorded
- Stable GPS indicator
- Stable receiver link
- Battery fully charged
- Antennas mounted correctly
