If your FPV drone immediately flips, rolls over, or crashes when trying to take off, this is usually caused by an incorrect configuration or hardware setup.
Do not continue attempting takeoff until the issue has been identified, as repeated crashes may damage motors, ESCs, propellers, or the frame.
Most Common Causes
A drone flipping on takeoff is usually caused by one of the following:
- Propellers installed incorrectly
- Wrong motor direction
- Incorrect motor order in Betaflight
- Wrong flight controller orientation
- Incorrect ESC or motor configuration
- Loose motor wires or damaged components
Step 1 — Check Propeller Orientation
Incorrect propeller installation is the most common cause.
Please verify:
- Each propeller matches the correct motor direction
- Props are installed in the correct position
- CW and CCW propellers are not mixed up
Most modern iFlight drones use either:
- Props In
or - Props Out
depending on the factory configuration in Betaflight.
Step 2 — Check Motor Direction
Remove all propellers before testing motors.
In Betaflight:
- Open the “Motors” tab
- Confirm the correct motor spins when activated
- Verify that each motor spins in the correct direction
If a motor spins in the wrong direction:
- Reverse it in BLHeli or ESC Configurator
or - Use the motor direction wizard where supported
Step 3 — Verify Motor Order
The motor layout in Betaflight must match the physical motor positions on the drone.
Incorrect motor mapping can immediately cause flips on takeoff.
You can verify this safely in the Betaflight Motors tab with props removed.
Step 4 — Check Flight Controller Orientation
If the flight controller was rotated, replaced, or configured incorrectly, the gyro orientation may not match the actual drone orientation.
In Betaflight:
- Open the “Setup” tab
- Tilt the drone physically
- Verify that the 3D model moves in the same direction
If the movement is incorrect, the FC orientation settings may need adjustment.
Important Safety Information
Always:
- Remove propellers before testing motors
- Use a smoke stopper after wiring changes
- Test carefully after configuration changes
- Fly only in safe open areas
